Study Plan

School-Year Study Plan

A week-by-week roadmap from the start of the school year to the Open Exam. It is the club's suggested plan, not a requirement. Plan on 2–3 hours per week outside club meetings. That is enough if you are consistent. Skip a week when you need to. The plan adjusts.

  1. Phase 1

    Foundations

Build the base: how to read an experiment, the molecules of life, and how membranes work.

  2. Phase 2

    Core Biology

Energy, cell signaling, gene expression, genetics, and evolution. This is the longest phase.

  3. Phase 3

    Advanced Biology

Ecology, plant biology, human physiology, animal biology, and behavior.

  4. Phase 4

    Application & Data Analysis

Mixed questions and unfamiliar experiments. Practice switching between topics.

  5. Phase 5

    Mock Exams

Timed, unofficial USABO-style mocks followed by careful review.

  6. Phase 6

    Final Review

Light review of weak areas, sleep, and exam logistics.

Busy week or holiday? Use Skip this week and everything after it moves back a week. Target: USABO Open Exam (official date for the 2027 season — verify on usabo-trc.org), Feb 3, 2027.

  1. 1Foundations

    • Take the Quick Practice set as a diagnostic (no studying first).
